ToggleWHAT HAPPENED?
United have submitted a €40m (£34m/$43m) offer for Hjulmand, pushing ahead of Juve in the race to sign the Danish midfielder, reports. United boss Ruben Amorim is reportedly keen on reuniting with the 25-year-old, whom he previously built around in Lisbon. Juve, meanwhile, are struggling to match Sporting’s €50m (£42m/$54m) valuation and may attempt a part-exchange deal involving Douglas Luiz or Arthur Melo.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Hjulmand is emerging as one of the most in-demand midfielders in Europe. Sporting inserted an €80m (£68m/$87m) release clause when he joined but are now open to negotiations closer to €50m (£42m/$54m). Amorim’s move to Old Trafford has opened the door for a Premier League reunion, and United have acted swiftly. Juve, despite long-standing interest, are being held back by financial constraints and internal squad trimming, including the unresolved future of Luiz, who has refused to turn up for pre-season training.

Hjulmand's agent believes a deal could be struck for €30–40m, aligning with United’s current offer. The Dane, formerly of Lecce, would be open to a Premier League move, particularly to reunite with Amorim. Juve are still trying to offload Luiz, linked with West Ham, Everton and Fenerbahce, and are also offering Melo to sweeten the deal. However, Sporting's fractured relationship with Juventus over a past deal involving Joao Mario and Alberto Costa could complicate negotiations.

WHAT NEXT FOR HJULMAND?
United's bid is now the benchmark, if Sporting reject it, a second offer is likely incoming, especially if Amorim makes Hjulmand a priority signing. For Juventus, finalising Luiz’s exit is essential before lodging a bid, although their preference to offer players in return could backfire.
